Biography of Clemens Alexander Winkler
Clemens Alexander Winkler (Winkler) was a German chemist and technologist who made significant contributions to the field of chemistry. He was born on December 26, 1838, in Freiberg and passed away on October 8, 1904, in Dresden.
Discovery of Germanium
In 1886, while studying the composition of the mineral argyrodite, Winkler discovered a new element which he named germanium. This discovery had a profound impact on the scientific community as it provided further evidence for the periodicity theory proposed by Dmitri Mendeleev. The properties of germanium closely matched those predicted by Mendeleev for an element he called eka-silicon in 1871.
